Tomorrow is Independence Day—which reminds me of Jesus.

  • Just as men and women fought and died to create a country where we could have freedom from an oppressive government, so did Jesus die on the cross to enable a way for us to live free from the stain of sin and the tyranny of rules.  Because of Jesus, we have true freedom.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,  because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2 NIV).

Throughout the history of our country, men and women have fought and died to preserve and protect the freedom we gained over 200 years ago in the War for Independence. They also fought and died to defend our right to worship the freedom we gained over 2000 years ago through Jesus.

Tomorrow we fly our flags and celebrate the colors: red, white and blue.

  • In flag symbolism, red is the color of blood shed—both of American soldiers who died and Jesus whose blood provided an eternal sacrifice for us.

  • White symbolizes peace and purity. We people long for peace in our lives and in our country. Jesus encompassed both peace and purity by His life and teachings.

  • Blue symbolizes justice. Our country is based on law; our society seeks justice to pursue wisdom and harmony. Father God is the supreme Judge; Jesus is our mediator; the Holy Spirit is our counselor.

Tomorrow I’ll be celebrating the freedom I have in this country and the freedom I have because of Jesus. And I’ll be waving my flag and remembering Him.
